TheAustraliangovernmenthopestousethevisittoadvancetheprogressofdiscussionswhichcouldleadtothestrikingofafreetradedealbetweenthetwonations.
TheAustraliangovernmenthasbeenastaunchsupporteroftheBushadministration’swaronterror,contributingtroopsandmilitaryhardwaretotheactionsinAfghanistanandIraqandbackingtheU.S.positionininternationalforumssuchastheUnitedNations.
BushhasdescribedHowardasa"goodfriend"anda"manofsteel"andthetwoleadersappeartohaveestablishedagenuinerapport.
ButBushalsocreatedadiplomatichiccuplastweekbyreferringtoAustraliaasa"sheriff"intheAsianregion,adescriptionwhichdoesnotsitwellwithsomeofAustralia’sneighborswhoconsiderCanberratobetoocloselyalignedtoWashington.
Duringhisspeechtotheparliament,BushisexpectedtothankHoward’sconservativegovernmentforitssupport,andjustifytheuseofmilitaryforceinIraq.
BushisthefourthU.S.presidenttovisitAustralia,followingBillClinton,hisfatherGeorgeBushandLyndonJohnsoninmakingthetripDownUnder.
Policeareexpectingaround5,000demonstratorstoattendralliesonThursdaywithmostvoicingtheirangerovertheIraqwar.TheyarealsoprotestingthedetentionofAustraliancitizensatGuantanamoBaymilitaryprison.
Butsecuritywillattempttopreventprotestorsfromgettingwithin500metersofthepresidentandhavebannedloudspeakersbeingdirectedattheofficialparty.
TheCanberravisitisthefinallegofasix-nationtourbyPresidentBushwhichincludedattendingtheAPECleaderssummitinBangkok,Thailand.
Thetripalsocoincideswithafour-dayvisitfromChinesePresidentHuJintaotoAustralia,althoughthetwoleaders’pathswillnotcross.HuwillalsoaddresstheAustralianparliament.
